old, involved in this remarkable collection of short stories has made a pledge. Contributors, authors, editors, and artist, have all committed their royalties to benefit the survivors of Southern California firestorms of 2007. Proceeds from the anthology will offer aid to those heroes through the support of the "Fire Safe Council of San Diego County." See the Echelon Press website for more info.
Because my own community was also affected, I felt a need to do more. In addition to the generous contributions being made by Echelon Press, I am donating $5.00 to Heads Up Therapy on Horseback for each anthology I sell. This Santa Clarita, CA, therapeutic equestrian center lost all but their horses in the disastrous “Buckweed” fire and is now scratching for funds to reopen to the many disabled and disadvantaged children who gain so much from their facility. They need to raise $7,000 just for a new conditional use permit. See: www.headsuptherapy.com. Heads Up was established in 1986 as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to providing therapeutic riding for disabled children. Want to help? Email me at annecarter @ beaconstreetbooks.com |

For some, the end of summer means harvesting, hayrides, back-to-school and getting ready for Halloween. For Southern Californians, fall is also a time to keep a watchful eye for tell-tale plumes of smoke. October of 2007 saw So Cal’s worst fire season in memorable history. No county was spared as we watched in horror while hundreds lost their homes and property.
With one e-mail sent by publisher Karen Syed to 21 authors, "The Heat of the Moment" was developed. Each of the authors, the youngest being sixteen years |

Fabulous Find! In researching the very Northern California lighthouse St. George Reef for my upcoming paranormal romantic mystery, CAPE SEDUCTION, I came across this incredible book written by Dennis M. Powers! SENTINEL OF THE SEAS is the story of St. George Reef, the most expensive, most dangerous lighthouse ever built. Located six miles from the nearest shore point (and twelve miles from Crescent City, California), St. George took ten years to build. Based on five years of research drawing on National Archives, original journals and personal interviews, SENTINEL is the first book to capture the tumultuous history of this astounding engineering feat and the lives that were influenced by it. Many thanks to Dennis for his assistance with my own research efforts and putting me in touch with one of St. George’s surviving “wickies”, John Gibbons.
